2022 is Looking Very Peri

The Pantone Color Institute, known for being the global authority on color, has announced its 2022 color of the year: PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri. The color is an invigorating mix of blue and red specifically designed to emulate the current global zeitgeist. This marks the first year since the creation of the Color of the Year program in 2000 that Pantone has created a new color rather than selecting from its existing library of hues.

The base color of Very Peri, periwinkle, was selected due to the calming and comforting nature of the blue color family. The addition of a violet-red undertone warms the hue and energies the soul. Pantone describes the color as “displaying a carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit” and encourages inventiveness.

Like last year’s selection of two colors, PANTONE17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating, the desire to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the color selection. Very Peri symbolizes society’s current adaptations and innovations occurring in the face of the pandemic and highlights the merging of our physical and digital lives. This year, inspiration drew from the virtual world: VR games, esports, cryptocurrency and NFTs that stretch the limits of reality. Very Peri illustrates the current moment in time and represents the converging of our real and online lives.

Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, Laurie Pressman, stated, “as society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red violet infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us.” New solutions are on the horizon in 2022.
